A pair of small tables can solve a seating arrangement that one large coffee table cannot. Each can sit close to a person, move for a game, or separate when guests arrive. The benefit is reach, not simply the appearance of having two matching objects.
Imagine a sofa and a chair arranged at a right angle. A central table may be convenient for the sofa but too far from the chair. One small table beside the chair and another near the sofa arm can put drinks within easier reach while leaving the center more open.
Match the height to the job
A table beside a sofa arm usually needs a different relationship from a low table used as a foot-level surface. Sit in the actual seat and reach sideways. If your elbow has to lift awkwardly or your hand drops far below the arm, try another height. Use this test rather than relying on a universal proportion.
Small tables are not all equally stable. A heavy top on a narrow base may need special care around active children or pets. Follow the manufacturer's use and load instructions, and avoid placing a tall lamp on a tiny table simply because the base technically fits.
Let the pair have a difference
The two tables can share a material but differ in shape. A round wood table beside a chair and a rectangular wood table beside a sofa can feel related without looking like a set. If both occupy the center, vary height only enough to keep each surface easy to use; awkward overlapping levels can make glasses difficult to place.
Nesting tables offer compact storage, but check how far the smaller one pulls out and whether the upper frame obstructs it. A table that needs two hands and careful lifting may not provide the flexibility you imagined.
Leave a parking place for any piece you plan to move. Otherwise the table that gets displaced during a board game will end up in the walkway. Test the arrangement with ordinary objects—a mug, a book, a remote—rather than a decorative stack alone. If the surfaces accommodate those comfortably, you may find the room needs fewer tables than a conventional furniture list suggests.
