Replacing a coffee table with a large ottoman changes the room's behavior. Feet gain a resting place, the center feels softer, and drinks lose a dependable hard surface. Decide whether those changes suit the way you use the room before choosing the upholstery.
Separate the jobs
If the ottoman is mainly for feet, place it where the most-used seats can reach it comfortably. It does not need to be perfectly centered on the room. If it will also serve as occasional seating, check the manufacturer's intended use and load capacity; not every upholstered table is a seat.
A tray can provide a hard surface for cups, but it uses part of the ottoman and may move when someone rests their feet nearby. For regular hot drinks, a stable side table may be more suitable. Plan both functions rather than assuming the tray makes an upholstered top equivalent to a coffee table.
Games and puzzles raise another question. A deeply cushioned or tufted surface may not support a board evenly. If those activities are common, keep a separate table available or choose a firm, suitably sized surface for them elsewhere.
Consider the route around it
A large rectangular ottoman can fill the opening of a sectional well, but may also close off access to the corner seat. Test how people sit down and leave. Round forms can soften a turn, though a large circle still occupies significant width.
Measure height against the seats. A very high footrest can be uncomfortable for some users, while a low one may offer little support. Try a comparable piece in person if the ottoman will be used for long periods. Comfort is not determined by matching the sofa fabric.
Storage changes the routine
A lift-up lid is useful only if it can open without removing a heavy tray or disturbing someone every time. Check hinge behavior, the manufacturer's safety instructions, and whether the lid stays supported as designed. For frequently used blankets, a nearby basket may be easier than a storage compartment beneath the family's feet.
Read the upholstery care instructions before purchase. Shoes, food, and pets can make the ottoman a different cleaning problem from the sofa. A removable cover may help, but confirm what is actually washable and how it is dried.
Visually, the ottoman can repeat the sofa color for a calm center or introduce a different texture. Keep the surrounding tables lighter in scale if the upholstered block feels substantial. The arrangement should make room for feet and cups without asking one crowded surface to perform every task at once.
