Measure the top of your mattress before shopping for nightstands. Bed-frame height alone leaves out the mattress, topper, and sometimes the support system, so it can give a misleading picture of where your hand will land at night.
Sit on the bed and reach toward the proposed surface. Then try the same movement while lying in your usual position. A table that looks beautifully aligned with the bed frame may be awkwardly low beside a thick mattress. There is no reason to accept an uncomfortable reach merely to match a furniture collection.
Think in three dimensions
Height is only part of the decision. A deep nightstand can project beyond the headboard and narrow the route beside the bed. A very narrow top may fit the room but leave no space after a lamp is added. Lay out the actual objects you want nearby—a book, glasses, water, and perhaps a charging device—and measure their combined footprint.
IKEA's nightstand range includes both open and drawer-based designs, illustrating how differently the same general piece can work. An open shelf offers easy access but displays everything. A drawer can contain small items, though it needs room to open beside the bed and any projecting frame.
Check the bed's edges
An upholstered headboard with wings can stop a nightstand from moving close enough. A platform that extends beyond the mattress can leave the table farther away than expected. Include those projections in the plan, and test whether the drawer handle catches on bedding.
For a shared bed, the two sides do not need identical tables if the available space or routines differ. Similar top heights can make an unmatched pair feel intentional. If one person uses a medical device, follow its placement and power instructions rather than styling it into an unsuitable enclosure.
Leave room for the lamp
A lamp's base is not its only dimension. The shade may extend over the bed, block a drawer, or sit in the route to the closet. Test the switch from the bed and keep the cord away from walking areas and moving furniture.
A small drawer organizer can keep the top clear without making the nightstand larger. Avoid buying extra storage for objects that could live elsewhere. The best bedside surface usually holds a small, reliable set of essentials at a height you can use comfortably, with enough empty space to put something down without rearranging the entire display.
