A table lamp on a narrow console

Fit a table lamp on a narrow console by measuring the shade and base, checking the passing route, and keeping enough usable surface beside it.

A lamp base can fit on a narrow console while its shade projects well into the walkway. Measure the assembled lamp, not just the part touching the table. The shade is often the widest element and the one most likely to be bumped.

Begin with the console's depth and the space in front of it. Consider bags, coats, and people turning through the area. A lamp suitable behind a sofa may be poorly placed in a tight entry where passing traffic comes close.

Compare shade shapes

A rectangular or oval shade may offer a shallower profile than a round one of similar visual width. Its fitting and orientation still need to suit the base. Lamps Plus's shade guidance emphasizes compatibility and proportion; changing the shape should not compromise the lamp's required clearances or stability.

A slender lamp can preserve surface area, but it should remain stable in its intended position. Avoid placing it on a stack of books merely to achieve a preferred height if that makes it easier to knock over. Follow the maker's instructions and keep the cord from pulling on the base.

Leave a working area

If the console is a landing place, reserve a clear section for keys or a bag. A lamp, large vase, several frames, and a decorative tray can consume the entire top. Choose which function matters most and remove objects that compete with it.

Check the light from nearby seats as well as from the hallway. A tall console may put the bulb directly in view from a low sofa. A deeper shade or different lamp height may solve that better than a dimmer bulb.

Place the cord along an appropriate route to the outlet, away from drawers and walking paths. Do not let a decorative arrangement hide a cable that is being pinched or stretched.

Once the lamp is in place, view the console from both ends of the room. It can be asymmetrical, with the lamp on one side and a simpler object on the other. The arrangement works when the light is useful, the route remains clear, and the console still has enough surface to perform its everyday job.
