The right reading lamp is the one that lights the book from the position in which you actually sit. A floor lamp's overall height tells only part of that story. The shade, reach, beam direction, and chair height determine the useful relationship.
Sit in the chair with a book before choosing the lamp position. Notice where your hands and page naturally fall. A lamp placed for a photograph may be too far behind or too far to one side to illuminate that area well.
Put the source out of the direct view
Try the lamp beside and slightly behind the reading position, then adjust as the fixture permits. Look up from the page and check whether the bulb or bright opening is visible. Room & Board's lighting guidance emphasizes shielding the light source from the seated eye; the actual shade and chair determine how to achieve that in your room.
An adjustable head can help direct light, but check its range and whether it stays where positioned. A large arc may reach the page while its base occupies more floor than expected. Measure the entire shape, including the overhang.
Make the base part of the plan
The base should sit securely without intruding into the route around the chair. Do not tuck it under furniture unless the lamp is designed for that arrangement and remains stable. Keep the cord away from foot traffic and follow the fixture's instructions.
Place the switch where it can be reached comfortably. A foot switch hidden behind the chair or a small control on a distant cord can make an otherwise good lamp inconvenient. If several people use the chair, test the controls with their normal seating positions.
Check the surrounding light too. A bright page in a completely dark corner may not be the atmosphere you want. A softer nearby lamp can provide a background while the reading light does the focused work.
Choose the finish after the functional fit is clear. The lamp can relate to a table or picture frame without matching the chair. Its silhouette should leave enough room for getting in and out of the seat, with the book and light both easy to reach.
